#AverysActOfKindness THIS Saturday, June 8th
Did you know Canada.. this Saturday, June 8th, 2013 is a fundraiser event to raise funds for the Women & Babies Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Avery was born on January 18th, 2013 at 28 weeks and 2 days premature. When Avery was born she weighed 2 pounds 12oz. She was immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. There at Sunnybrook she was cared for by the best doctors and nurses in Canada. Her parents soon learned that Avery had a lung disease. She was diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Disease. Over the next few days she was given the absolute best care by some of the most compassionate health care professionals at Sunnybrook. Sadly after a long fight Avery passed away on January 28. With the NICU`s advanced technology and kind hearted staff her parents were able to spend 11 unforgettable days with Avery.
I was very lucky with my two pregnancies, everything went pretty smoothly. But to this day I still have nightmares about how quickly something could have happened, especially with my twins. My carrying twins to 37 weeks was fantastic, but they could have so easily been born very early, too early, like little Avery was. We must support NICU's so they can support our babies, because you never know when that situation could happen in your family.
Avery's family is holding their first fundraiser event to raise funds for the Women & Babies Program at Sunnybrook. Their goal is to raise $10,000 towards an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This is a self contained unit that provides controlled heat, humidity and oxygen microenvironment for the baby. This device will help many more babies like Avery in the future.
Starting at 11 am this is a family oriented event with BBQ, music, games for kids, wagon rides, silent auction items and fire truck tour - everyone is welcome.

It's panda-monium with TELUS and WWF!
Did you know Canada.. Giant pandas Er Shun and Da Mao, arrived at the Toronto Zoo last week, all the way from China! As part of a long-term conservation partnership agreement between China and Canada, signed by Hu Jintao, President of China and Mr. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada - these panda's are staying at the Toronto Zoo for at least 5 years and then heading to the Calgary Zoo sometime in 2018.
Currently at rest and getting used to their new home, their exhibit opens May 18th.
It's panda-monium this spring and the giant panda is the star of TELUS’ new mobility and multicultural campaigns! The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) is Canada’s largest international conservation organization with the active support of more than 150,000 Canadians. They are creating solutions to the most serious conservation challenges facing our planet, helping people and nature thrive. Since 2000, TELUS, its team and retirees have contributed more than $200,000 to WWF - TELUS is also helping further the cause by purchasing Adoption Kits from the WWF to share with their friends. I received one of these awesome kits at a recent TELUS event I attended, it is SO nice, thoughtful and something I really enjoyed sharing with my boys!
For the first time, TELUS' advertising is featuring computer generated imagery (CGI) critters instead of live animals. To create their CGI pandas, they used existing images and videos of pandas to build a digital model that was refined, groomed and textured until its skin, hair, facial expressions and movement were as lifelike as possible. The entire process took nearly six months! Check out their latest feature..
I love how dedicated TELUS is to the community and the World Wildlife Fund, check out what they are doing here. This year they are working on some new opportunities to team up with WWF to keep our critters safe for years to come I love supporting companies who are in turn supporting our communities, don't you?

Get In The Know - Help stop insurance fraud #T2T
Did you know Canada.. I just learned something I didn't know, and maybe you didn't either, if you suspect someone of committing insurance fraud you can submit an anonymous tip to Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC)!
IBC runs a toll-free tips line, available 24/7. Just call 1-877-422-TIPS. Or you can submit a confidential tip online - how forward thinking is this!
We all know that sometimes no good deed goes unpunished, and trying to involve law enforcement in a suspected insurance fraud case might leave you nervous, uncomfortable and you end up avoiding the situation to save yourself the hassle. Now you can do the right thing and do so anonymously, so you don't end up in the middle.
Reporting fraud not only stops a criminal, it keeps premiums down for all of us, makes our roads safer and can prevent future crimes. No fraud case is too small either, this isn't just about stealing a car or someone that is pretending to be injured. This is also about someone making an exaggeration on claim, offer or accept unnecessary treatment after a collision-related injury has healed, or including pre-collision damage on an auto insurance claim. Don't get fooled by someone that might shrug these situations off saying everybody does it.

Earth Hour 2013
Did you know Canada.. this Saturday, March 23rd, is Earth Hour from 8:30PM – 9:30 PM local time across 152 countries.
Earth Hour is a time when we turn off the lights and consider climate change. According to the WWF, climate change is the biggest environmental threat to our planet and the number one concern for Canadians.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. The next year more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. By 2010, Earth Hour had created history as the largest voluntary action ever witnessed with participation across 128 countries and every continent.
During Earth Hour 2011 many world landmarks switched off their lights including the Forbidden City, Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Golden Gate Bridge, Table Mountain, Christ the Redeemer statue and Sydney Opera House.
Last year, 2012, the campaign experienced the largest growth since 2009, what will be in store for 2013?
Unfortunately, one the least co-operative areas traditionally has been Alberta. In 2008 Calgary's power consumption actually went up during Earth Hour. In 2011 Edmonton's power usage also increased during Earth Hour. So let's get the word out to Canadians, flick off the lights this Saturday night from 8:30 - 9:30PM and stand up for climate change!

WSPA
Did you know Canada.. the WSPA is the World Society for the Protection of Animals. They have worked to expose animal cruelty and prevent animal suffering for more than 30 years.
The WSPA works with individuals, organizations and governments across the globe, they work towards ending the mass suffering of industrially farmed animals, protecting animals in disasters and more.
You can make the world a better place for farm animals every day too. Simply commit to making more humane food choices when you shop and eat. You can take the pledge and join the global barnyard!
Take the pledge and commit to making life better for farm animals. By making more humane food choices when we shop and eat (such as choosing pasture-raised animal products, cage-free eggs, etc.), we can use our purchasing power to change the conditions in which farm animals live.
This is kinda fun too, as a thank you for taking the pledge, you can “Farmify” your face, and share the fun photo with your social networks, friends and family.
Sadly most farm animals live in extremely cramped conditions. They are fed unnatural diets, antibiotics and suffer painful mutilations like de-beaking and tooth breaking so they can be kept at huge numbers on factory farms. I think it's time to take the pledge, what about you?

Prematurity Awareness
Did you know Canada.. we have a very important guest post today about Prematurity Awareness from Elizabeth - Frugal Mom Eh..
Prematurity is not something most women consider a possibility during their pregnancy. Most women have no idea what goes on inside the NICU. Most women have no idea what it is like to go through having a baby born prematurely. I was the same before my daughter was born 11 weeks early and due to this ignorance I was left feeling very alone, depressed and scared.
I felt robbed of my pregnancy, robbed of my perfect birth. Scared she would not make it. Afraid there would be lasting issues.
When I was discharged from the hospital and sent home alone I just sat in my empty house and cried. I wasn’t pregnant anymore. My baby was in the hospital and I desperately wanted her there with me.
At the time I thought something was wrong with me and I couldn’t understand all the emotions but I know now just how normal they all were.
Even more normal is the excitement preemie parents feel about being able to do the diaper change and hold the NG tube for the feed and the disappointment when you show up and it has already been done by one of the staff. You find yourself picking up and even using all the hospital jargon as if it were every day English.
There are no cute posed newborn photos, instead you settle on shots taken outside an incubator.
Rather than waking up throughout the night to breastfeed your newborn you wake up to an alarm signalling it is time to pump. Honk Moo Honk Moo.
We celebrate every victory – coming off breathing support, coming off all the IVs, a clear head ultrasound and so on.
When my daughter came home after 54 days in the NICU I quickly found out two things. One was that a lot of people are preemies, have had preemies or know preemies. The other thing I found was that a lot of other people know nothing about preemies.
When out with my daughter I found people Oohing and Awwing over how little she was and asking in wonder how old she was. What an awkward question. Did they want their actual age? Maybe they would understand her adjusted age – the age she would have been had she not been early?
Keira’s development, like all preemies, is measured by her adjusted age rather than her actual age. This is because development doesn’t speed up just because you are born. After all premature babies aren’t just babies born a little too early; they are babies who weren’t finished! It can take until 2 years of age or longer for a preemie to catch up in both size and development. Right now, as a baby, those 3 months make a huge difference. When she gets older those few months won’t be so important at all.
Preemies get evaluated every few months to measure their growth and development and are often behind even for their adjusted age. See finishing developing outside the womb does not work quite as well as inside, no matter how good the care in the NICU.

Prematurity is not something most women consider a possibility during their pregnancy. Most women have no idea what goes on inside the NICU. Most women have no idea what it is like to go through having a baby born prematurely. I was the same before my daughter was born 11 weeks early and due to this ignorance I was left feeling very alone, depressed and scared.
I felt robbed of my pregnancy, robbed of my perfect birth. Scared she would not make it. Afraid there would be lasting issues.
When I was discharged from the hospital and sent home alone I just sat in my empty house and cried. I wasn’t pregnant anymore. My baby was in the hospital and I desperately wanted her there with me.
At the time I thought something was wrong with me and I couldn’t understand all the emotions but I know now just how normal they all were.
Even more normal is the excitement preemie parents feel about being able to do the diaper change and hold the NG tube for the feed and the disappointment when you show up and it has already been done by one of the staff. You find yourself picking up and even using all the hospital jargon as if it were every day English.
There are no cute posed newborn photos, instead you settle on shots taken outside an incubator.
Rather than waking up throughout the night to breastfeed your newborn you wake up to an alarm signalling it is time to pump. Honk Moo Honk Moo.
We celebrate every victory – coming off breathing support, coming off all the IVs, a clear head ultrasound and so on.
When my daughter came home after 54 days in the NICU I quickly found out two things. One was that a lot of people are preemies, have had preemies or know preemies. The other thing I found was that a lot of other people know nothing about preemies.
When out with my daughter I found people Oohing and Awwing over how little she was and asking in wonder how old she was. What an awkward question. Did they want their actual age? Maybe they would understand her adjusted age – the age she would have been had she not been early?
Keira’s development, like all preemies, is measured by her adjusted age rather than her actual age. This is because development doesn’t speed up just because you are born. After all premature babies aren’t just babies born a little too early; they are babies who weren’t finished! It can take until 2 years of age or longer for a preemie to catch up in both size and development. Right now, as a baby, those 3 months make a huge difference. When she gets older those few months won’t be so important at all.

MommiesFirst
Did you know Canada.. this September a new Canadian company began delivering care packages to the homes of new expectant and new moms. MommiesFirst sends its members a beautiful box each month filled with 4-5 of the most relevant products for a mom to discover during that particular stage of her pregnancy or her baby’s life (from 0 to12 month in age). MommiesFirst is the first service of its kind in Canada!
MommiesFirst was started by Lorena Pacheco Scott, a Toronto mother of two, in response to her own experience as a new mom. Lorena says, three years ago when my first son was born I was scared, overwhelmed, and confused. At first I thought I was the only one who felt this way, but in talking to other mums, I very quickly discovered these are emotions many of us experience. I never forgot those feelings of despair and loneliness, and after my second son was born, I resolved to do something about it. MommiesFirst was created to help make a difference for all the other new moms out there.
So, we are now on a mission to make lives for Canadian moms a little bit easier and a lot less stressful. How are we doing this? With the help of the MommiesFirst Council, a group of moms, dads, and baby experts, we are doing a ton of research on behalf of our mom members. The MommiesFirst Council is tasked with finding, testing, and reviewing the HUGE amount of baby and mom focused product out there in order to create the right care package for our members. It is our hope that sending MommiesFirst care packages that are both beautiful and helpful, we make it easier for moms to discover the best products for them and their babies. We don’t pretend to be able to solve all of a new mom’s challenges, or worse yet, sugar coat these issues. Instead, we appreciate the difficulties because we’ve 100% been there too.
Overall it has been an unbelievable journey since launching our website in May and then shipping our first boxes in September, and the response from moms has been wonderful. Their feedback serves as a constant reminder of why we started MommiesFirst. Another incredibly rewarding aspect of creating MommiesFirst is supporting Canadian mompreneurs. There are A LOT of Canadian businesses started by mothers who were inspired by their own personal journeys and decided to create great products to help other moms. MommiesFirst is giving these amazing women a platform to tell their stores and showcase their lovely products (many of which are also designed and manufactured right here in Canada).

Burt's Bees partners with Canadian accessories designer Jenny Bird
Did you know Canada.. A favourite of ours, Burt's Bees, just announced a partnership with Canadian accessories designer Jenny Bird!
Jenny has created a custom, Limited-Edition friendship bracelet commissioned by Burt's Bees to help raise awareness and funds to help work to save Canada's depleting bee populations!
How is great it that 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of this Limited-Edition bracelet will go to the Pollinator Partnership, a not-for-profit organization whose mission it is to protect and restore populations of pollinator species, bees in particular.
Bees of course are a critical part of our ecosystem and they pollinate our crops!
Did you know - 43 types of Canada's bumblebees are currently threatened, and 99% of the Rusty Patched bumblebee populations has already been lost!
The bees are in trouble because of pesticide use, diseases, pollution and loss of habitat.

Hockey Spirit Calendar
Did you know Canada.. I've mentioned before that I'm a hockey Mom. My boys just finished their first season in March, their Grampa is one of their coaches, and we go skating in the off season at least once a week.
I was so excited to find out about Hockey Spirit Fundraising. Created by Elizabeth Urlacher and her husband, they've created a beautiful hockey calendar which is used by clubs across Canada to raise funds for hockey, non-profit, and various charitable organizations.
I love that they know their audience! Creating a 15 month calendar that runs October-December of the following year, perfect for the hockey season!! Each month's page allows plenty of space to record family activities, games, practices and tournaments. Measuring 1 foot wide by 2 feet tall hanging on the wall, this looks beautiful anywhere - we have ours in the kitchen. I was really impressed with the quality, the heart warming pictures each month and their obvious care and attention to details to make this calendar something to really enjoy and cherish.
